Hugo Fredrik Salmson (1843-1894) was a Swedish painter, famous for creating paintings of people and everyday scenes. Though he initially started out studying business, Hugo quickly realized his passion for art and decided to pursue a career as an artist.

In 1862, he enrolled at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Johan Christoffer Boklund. His painting of a historical meeting in Uppsala Cathedral (1867) won him a Royal Medal and a scholarship that allowed him to travel and study abroad.

In 1868, Salmson traveled to Paris, passing through Düsseldorf on the way. Since he couldn’t get into the popular classes of Léon Bonnat and Alexandre Cabanel, he took private lessons with another artist, Pierre-Charles Comte. He first exhibited his work at the Salon in 1870 with a painting of a cottage in Dalarna called Révélation. During the Franco-Prussian War, he moved to Brussels but continued his work as a painter.

Salmson kept a studio in Paris until the early 1880s and often visited the Picardy region. By 1883, he began spending his summers in Dalby, Skåne. After returning to Sweden, he became a member of the Royal Academy and even taught Prince Eugen. However, he later joined a group that disagreed with the Academy’s traditional teaching methods.

Salmson has had many of his art  exhibitions at various important events. The list is long but some of the notable ones are the Paris Salon, several exhibitions by the Royal Academy in Stockholm (1886-1888), the World Exhibition in 1878, the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and the Nordic Exhibition of 1888 in Copenhagen, and others.

In his later years, Salmson mainly focused on painting portraits using oil or pastel. Despite his success, he became withdrawn and struggled with depression. He passed away in 1894 while staying at a hotel in Lund.

Today, Hugo Fredrik Salmson’s paintings can be found in many museums, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Gothenburg Art Museum, the Malmö Art Museum, Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde, Lund University, the Musée de Picardie, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, the Bergen City Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
